David Foster Wallace is Dead
Apparent suicide. What an incredible bummer. His writing makes me feel like every single human being has the capacity for bottomless empathy and understanding. It also makes me laugh. I honestly feel like I lost a friend.
To DFW: You made a lot of people pretty upset this weekend, man. I’m sorry that you felt hopeless or sad or overwhelmed or whatever it was that caused you so much terrible and unceasing emotional pain.* I’ll read your books over and over again for the rest of my life, not as any sort of tribute, but because I love them.
* ‘Terrible and unceasing emotional pain’ is your phrase, taken from your story “The Depressed Person”.

Sorry Andy… I can’t say much more than that. Some of the people we connect best with in life have no idea. It’s strange that a mind can hurt itself in the way that it always seems to affect overly analytical humans… I’ve never actually read any of his books, but I’ll be sure to put one at the top of my list. Which one should I read?
