L.A. Times: Michael Jackson’s American Music Awards nominations: Unfair?
I don’t know who you are, Todd Martens, but this post is totally dumb. If you’re going to write about the surprise of MJ being nominated for a compilation album that is over five years old, you owe it to your reputation as a writer (but mostly to ME) to come up with a better angle than ‘Is it unfair?’.
Perhaps a better use of your time would have been to discuss the obvious impact MJ’s death has had on the music community, even now, months later. That even though some of this outpouring may be perceived as extreme, what’s more relevant is that they seem, in one way, to be expressions of a kind of grief that is uniquely difficult to overcome. And that out of this grief and love for Michael and his music, there seems to be a shared need to honor him. Or more importantly, to never stop honoring him. And maybe discuss where that might come from. That maybe our reaction to his passing is actually a powerful demonstration of how intricately our political, personal and cultural histories are interwoven.
But no, TAWD. You did something boring instead. Way to go.
