The Power Gap – Animation
If you know me then you know I love animation, and especially have been interested in the video essay variety for my own personal work. Recently British think-tank Demos teamed up with creative agency Airside to create “The Power Gap,” that surveys the history of power structures in Western society. The concept is unbelievably well executed, and I just wish it gave better action steps for what to do about it. I’m not sure if there is just a group devoted to advocacy for power discrepancies, but surely there is some educational non-profit with a focus on this classic issue.
“The Power Gap,” is about something most people have never deeply considered, despite how pervasive and potent it is. Airside deftly used the jester’s tactic to reach it’s audience: humor mixed with equal parts profundity. The design and the narrative are simple enough to be swallowed on the first viewing but loaded with enough significance that fully digesting them requires time and—here’s the rub—thought.
